Good News from Mattapoisett’s Special Town Meeting

Nicki Demakis addressing the 4 OCT Town meeting

Good News from Mattapoisett’s Special Town Meeting

On October 4th, Mattapoisett residents once again demonstrated the power of civic engagement and community participation. The Special Town Meeting warrant included an article aimed at reconsidering the previously approved Select Board expansion — a measure that voters had already supported during May’s Annual Town Meeting.

In a strong show of support for that earlier decision, the article was permanently tabled through a motion that passed overwhelmingly. This means there will be no further vote to undo the expansion, and the will of the voters remains intact.

This outcome reflects not only the community’s continued confidence in the decision to expand the Select Board, but also the value of showing up, staying informed, and participating in local government. Every person who took the time to attend, listen, and vote helped ensure that the democratic process in Mattapoisett remains vibrant and fair.

A heartfelt thank you to petitioner Nicki Demakis (also the Chair of the Mattapoisett DTC) for her perseverance and leadership throughout this process. Her dedication and steady commitment to civic engagement were instrumental in ensuring that this important issue was addressed transparently and resolved decisively.

Moments like these remind us that when residents take part in town meetings — when neighbors speak up, ask questions, and work together — our local democracy grows stronger.
