No Kings: A Joyful Protest for Democracy — Thank You, South Coast!
On Saturday, October 18th, community members from across the South Coast came together in Mattapoisett for No Kings: A Joyful Protest for Democracy — a powerful and peaceful demonstration of unity, hope, and civic pride. From handmade signs to uplifting music, the event brought people of all ages into the streets to celebrate what connects us: our shared belief in democracy and the power of people coming together.
🌟 A Day of Joyful Protest
What a day! The “No Kings” rally brought together an incredible crowd of neighbors, activists, and local leaders — all standing for democracy, freedom, and a future built on inclusion and participation.
From our peaceful protest at the corners of North Street and Route 6 to the march and speaking program at Shipyard Park, the day was filled with music, energy, and hope. The sight of so many people waving signs, chanting, and celebrating community was a reminder that democracy thrives when people show up.
We heard inspiring words from our Chair Nicki Demakis, Bryan Winter, Andy Pollock, Michelle Cusolito, Michael Kovacevich and Frances-Feliz Kearns who each reminded us in their own way that protecting democracy takes courage, love, and persistence.
Thank you to all our partner organizations — the Mattapoisett, Fairhaven, and Rochester Democratic Town Committees, Indivisible Southcoast, South Coast LGBTQ+ Network, Mass 50501, and the MA Freedom to Read Coalition — for making this event a true community effort.
A special thanks to our safety marshals, volunteers, and attendees for keeping the event peaceful, organized, and joyful. And to those who stayed afterward to support local favorites like The Inn on Shipyard Park and the Town Wharf General Store — you truly embodied the spirit of community in action.

🚨 A Note on Event Conduct and Our Values
In the spirit of transparency, we also want to address a concern that arose after the event.
After the rally, it was brought to our attention that one individual in attendance displayed a protest sign that did not align with our values of nonviolence, respect, and inclusion. The sign’s content was inappropriate and in poor taste.
During the event, three members of the press, a uniformed police officer, and event leadership were present and monitoring the gathering. None observed or interacted with this individual at the time.
As soon as the incident was reported, the matter was referred to the Mattapoisett Police Department, and we have cooperated fully with law enforcement. The issue is currently under investigation.
Our movement stands for peaceful civic engagement, community solidarity, and respect for all. We do not tolerate hate, harassment, or intimidation of any kind — and we remain committed to ensuring that all future events continue to reflect these shared values.
🕊️ Together, We Move Forward
The “No Kings” rally was a beautiful reminder that democracy is alive and well here on the South Coast. Thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke out, marched, sang, and stood together — joyfully, peacefully, and powerfully. Every action you take matters, large or small.
