July 2022 Note from the Chair

Dear Members of the Mattapoisett Democratic Town Committee:

Thank you for your confidence in electing me as your next Chair. I would like to thank Chair Emeritus, Patricia Murray and her Board for their dedication and hard work in guiding this committee over the last five tumultuous “Trump” years. I certainly have large shoes to fill but I am excited, energized and very much looking forward to working with my new Board and all of you as we move into 2022 the mid-terms.

As everyone knows – from the events of January 6, 2021 to the recent SCOTUS opinions attacking our rights to privacy, the separation of church and state and our environment – Democracy is under assault from the local to the Federal level. Fortunately, we live in a State that believes in the protection of these rights with our Legislature passing a bill on June 29, 2022 which aims to protect abortion providers and people seeking abortions from actions taken by other states.

People living in other states are not so lucky. That is why I believe one of the main focuses of our Committee as we approach the November 2022 mid-terms should be to assist in efforts in some of these out-of-state races, specifically the Pennsylvania and Wisconsin Senate races; and some key House races which I will outline at our next meeting. With SCOTUS ending our long-fought for right for a woman to be able to choose what she wants to do with her body, there has been a major shift in polling in the last week showing many races which were easily R wins, to swaying to possible D victories. I believe the threat to everything Democrats believe in is so exigent that our Committee’s goal should be, in addition to assisting local Democratic candidates win re-election, finding ways we can assist in holding the House and gaining two more seats in the Senate – PA and WI – so we can once and for all abolish the filibuster and pass the remainder of Joe’s priorities before we move into full Presidential election mode.
I am excited to work with everyone in molding our electoral agenda in the upcoming months and welcome everyone’s suggestions. I will see you all on July 21, 2022 at 7 PM at our next meeting.
