05 Nov Finding our “Why” – A Conversation with Indivisible South Coast
At our October 1st, 2025 meeting, the Mattapoisett Democratic Town Committee had the pleasure of welcoming Regina McIntyre, representing Indivisible South Coast, a local chapter of the national Indivisible network. Many of our members already knew Regina from her work as a member of the Mattapoisett Democratic Town Committee, as well as from the “Bridge Brigades” and community rallies that have energized Fairhaven and surrounding towns over the past year. Her presentation offered an inspiring look at how Indivisible organizes — and why this grassroots movement remains such a vital part of defending democracy at the local level.
What Indivisible Is
Indivisible is a national, grassroots, non-partisan, non-violent, pro-democracy network.
It’s a decentralized movement — local groups set their own priorities while remaining connected through thousands of volunteer-run chapters across the country. The shared foundation is simple but powerful: strategic, peaceful action and anti-authoritarian values that strengthen civic participation and community courage.
Why It Matters
Regina encouraged everyone to “find your why” — to be ready to answer the question, “Why are you here?” For some, it’s the environment. For others, it’s the Constitution, equality, or simply a better future for their families. Participating locally isn’t just about politics; it’s about replacing doom-scrolling with visible action and finding optimism through community.
As Regina shared, “Courage is contagious.”
What They Do Locally (South Coast & Nearby)
Here on the South Coast, Indivisible members have built a reputation for creative, visible, and community-rooted activism:
- Creative Organizing: Sign-making parties and visual/theatrical protest ideas that keep messages fresh and engaging.
- Mutual Aid & Rights Support: Collaboration with local immigrant-rights groups such as LUCE Mass, distributing “know-your-rights” cards and hotline information. Partner organizations also work on detention-facility access and advocacy — all non-violent.
- Civic Engagement: Postcard and letter-writing, lobbying efforts, and voter outreach supported by Indivisible National resources.
- Tools & Communications: Facebook and Instagram for outreach, as well as their website DoSomethingSC.org.
- Bridge Brigade: A team that displays signs on the pedestrian overpass by the commuter rail — music encouraged!
- De-escalation & Safety at Protests: Indivisible offers national trainings on de-escalation and maintaining safety at rallies and events.
- Weekly Strategy Call: “What’s the Plan?” — Thursdays at 3:00 PM.
How to Plug In
Indivisible offers many ways to get involved, no matter your schedule, skills, or experience. Whether your strengths are creative, organizational, or simply showing up in solidarity, there’s a place for everyone.
